Restoring Lost Songs: Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy

We're delighted to announce the launch of a a new series of videos, made in collaboration with filmmaker Blazej Mikula from the Cambridge Digital Library. The videos focus on one manuscript – the 'Cambridge Songs' Leaf – which contains neumatic notation for six of the songs from Book I of Boethius's De Consolatione Philosophiae, recently reconstructed by Sam Barrett and members of Sequentia. Each video allows the viewer to follow the notation in the manuscript as the melody for the opening lines of each song notated on the leaf is sung in turn; in this way, the relationship between these enigmatic symbols and the music that they unlock is brought to life.
