Restoring Lost Songs: Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy

Completed reconstructions collected here provide melodic outlines that may serve as starting points for others to consider in preparation of their own performances.  Reconstructions will be added on a regular basis along with supporting explanations.  Users are also welcome to submit their own versions to boethius@mus.cam.ac.uk for consideration.

General principles of reconstruction are introduced in the Introduction to Reconstruction, which is designed to introduce principles developed in scholarly work and extended in collaboration with members of Sequentia.  A case study is also provided, applying the general principles to one neumed example by way of demonstration of the types of decisions that are made in practice.  It is hoped that both the general introduction and case study will enable others to attempt their own reconstructions. An annotated bibliography of introductory writing on neumatic notation is provided under Reading Neumes.
